I see you my budding entreprenuer... I've been exactly where you were --- Any of these playing in your head right now?
Everyone's raving about it, but how do you know if it's the one? They say it's easy to use but you know better - there's always a learning curve with software!!!
How will you ever find the time to learn new software AND marketing AND start building out your course or membership, or planning what your online business will look like? You just want easy, something you can do yourself....and not have to pay others to do.
Whoever said running an online business is really simple is LYING. Yep there - you've said it. The more you learn about what needs to happen the more you realise this is no walk in the park.
Hey - I'm Penny Clements, and I've been exactly where you are now!!! Coming from a 'nerdy' computer background... but also having spent most of my life in the advertising industry (yep weird combo, I know) I learnt early on... that not all we are shown in the world is the truth. And it's always the best marketers that suck us in to buying a product, an app, a program, a course -- through masterful emotional copywriting and promises of gold at the end of the rainbow.
But many a time, this fake approach to marketing gets in the way of you and I truly finding the product we need. We spend hours reading reviews, talking to others, trialling or even buying a sample of something to see if it's the 'thing' we're after.
So.... after working with many different businesses, in varying industries, and having run a few of my own businesses... I ended up with a method to find out QUICKLY if a product or program was going to help my business or create even more lost hours...
I realise this is a silly question - you want an online business DOH! But what type? Are you planning on selling courses? A Membership? Both of those? What about physical products? Or will you only be selling digital products? What about Live Classes? Make a list of everything you'll be selling & keep it handy.
This makes a difference - some software program plans come with a limited number of courses available on the base plan, and it's important when you're starting out to WATCH YOUR BUDGET! Maybe you're planning on 3? The usual small ticket course, medium price course & signature larger ticket course.
Again - makes a difference. If you already have a website that you're happy with on Wordpress or Squarespace or Wix etc, will you be wanting to move it to an all-in-one program? Or happy to keep it where it is because you have awesome SEO? Or mabye it's a cost thing? Maybe it will be easier to have your website part of one program, and one cost?
Do you currently send out newsletters to your 'fans'? Do you send emails notifying them of new offers or tips and tricks, general marketing? If so, what program are you already using? Mailchimp, Convertkit, Active Campaign, Ontraport? What about creating landing pages, or webinar registration pages to sell your course - and email autoresponders to go with this?
HARSH? Yep.
I'm nothing but truthful. Â It simply means you need to go back over those courses you bought and DO THE WORK.
And if you haven't bought any courses, or signed up to podcasts, on how to run, manage, create, or grow an online business... then that's where you should be heading right NOW!!!
(My favorites -> you'll find here)
Now add these to your checklist of questions as well:
Draw up a list of all the platforms and their features... maybe pop them into a spreadsheet for handy reference.
If you only sell to government agencies, or corporates or big businesses - your needs (and those of your customers) are going to be very different. Like the ability to have bulk licenses and multiple students under one account... or super secure logins, or specific grading of courses... think about your type of customer.. and then look for the program that SUITS THEM.
Would it be a must-have to send them a Certificate of Completion?
Or what about being able to set up webinars for people to watch and learn from you before they buy?
Would they like to read a blog from you or be sent regular emails?
Do you want them to be able to ask questions directly inside your courses?
Or communicate with each other in a Community Area?
Based on all you've learnt above, and of course on the vast amount of research you've already done... write up your must-have and might-be-nice lists BEFORE you go looking at any more programs.
Do you want to have the ease of an all-in-one program, say like Kajabi, or the multiple taped together products approach? Both have Pro's and Con's... and again it will come down to your wishlist.
All programs have different prices and plans, and when you're just starting out it's hard to fork out a few hundred $$$ a month. BUT... be careful here - just because a NON-All-in-one platform seems cheap, there's likely many plugins that you'll need to tack on.. and these can add up!
So another biggie is if the company behind the program offers a help desk, is it 24/7, only email - how accessible are they? Do they have a FB group where you can see other users? Are there service providers that specialize in providing users EXTRA help? Custom work? etc
Why? Because it suited my needs. Initially I ran a service based business and offered one to one consulting, plus online courses, and a membership program. I didn't already have a website so it appealed to me to be able to build it on Kajabi.. and I knew that because it's an all-in-one platform things would just always work. When you're not plugging in various 3rd party software to make your business work, nothing gets broken (well not without user stuff-ups haha).
I'd been down the Wordpress path, and I was done with having to constantly do updates for every single 3rd party plugin and for the WP framework as well...
I wanted simple. Uncomplicated... but something that also let me tackle every component of my future business. It ticked off 85% of my checklists - and the remaining 15%? Well I've found workarounds for that.
My business has morphed today into selling Templates and Themes for Kajabi, plus a few courses. 7 years later... it still suits my needs 💖.
Â
The program that ticks off more than 80% of your ticklist.

IT MIGHT NOT BE AS EASY AS THEY SAY, BUT IT'S ALOT MORE FUN BEING ABLE TO WORK IN YOUR PYJAMAS & CHAT WITH NEWLY FOUND ONLINE-BIZ BUDDIES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD!
BUT ONLY IFÂ KAJABI TICKS 80% OR MORE OF YOUR CHECKLIST!!!.Â
